Now, this is weird. You came here to find another source of motivation to keep going, and you’re being told that you shouldn’t. Hang on, because I have valid reasons for this, and I hope you will agree with me at least on something. You see, motivation is a slippery topic. As we are all different individuals, what works for one person doesn’t really do the same miracle for another, and it’s pretty easy to fall into accusations of laziness from that spot. Here are 4 reasons why you should stop reading motivational books:1. Our mind doesn’t differentiate fiction and real lifeWell, of course, not on a massive scale – though some religions and conspiracy theories suggest that we are all delusional and the real life is different. However, psychological experiments confirm that our minds can’t really tell whether the thing is actually happening or we are just watching or reading about it. This is why we get so entrenched by a fascinating movie or a good book. Generally, it’s a good thing, but it can turn on you when it comes to motivation. It turns out for me that the more I read and visualize my success, the less motivated I feel. I get this sugary state of dreaminess and numbness, which, I guess, appears due to the fact my brain thinks that I am already there. 2. These books create a dangerous illusionThe illusion we all like to play is named “I’m doing something good with my life,” and it probably has its roots in the first point. I bet you know the feeling you get when you start eating healthier or doing sports just to drop that the next day. You will feel guilty, sure, but you still get that “I’m doing something good with my life” feeling. This feeling is addictive, because it gives us a sense of change and improvement without the actual strain of change and improvement (because we aren’t doing much in reality). And somehow reading articles on how to eat healthier and become more organized has the exact same impact on me – they trick me into feeling I’m doing something useful. Yes, reading is good, but I’m not doing anything that moves me towards my goal. 3. There’s nothing new to sayOkay, the Internet is the place where information is repeated over and over and over again. It is also probably an essential part of human nature, since useful information was the key to survival a long time ago. But now reading 15 articles on the same topic isn’t likely to spike your chances of success, because at least half of them will contain the exact same advice. Do you know what to do with the time you have now? Do the actual thing you intend to work on or want to start! We are all motivation junkies, so let yourself occasionally read an article or two, and publish your favorite quote once a week. This will help you both save time and stay on the verge of your emotional state.
4. No one can do that for youThis is one of my personal favorites, because I am the kind of person who thinks that if you aren’t enjoying something, you shouldn’t do it. Don’t get me wrong, I have this on a scale a human being should not have – all in all, we all have things we don’t like doing, and they are unlikely to end. Raised by parents with a “you must” mindset, I once made up my mind to not do a single thing I didn’t like, and that didn’t turn out so well. The good thing about motivational books and a motivation-friendly attitude is that you can learn a lot about yourself, your likes and dislikes. The bad thing is that it leaves the feeling that I can find just the right motivational method, and success will be easy (at least, that is true for me). Sadly – no, you can’t take the actual work out of the work by clever motivational techniques and habit-creating strategies. Quitting the almost-compulsive reading of motivational articles is a good thing on its own, but as you probably know, you need to do something else to fill the void and make the habit stick. Here are 3 things to do instead:1. Take time to find your passionYes, this is another boring piece of advice you’ve heard a gazillion times. At least I thought so before I actually stumbled upon my passion. Do you know what you need to do? Try things, and one of them will inevitably attract your attention. What do you need to have to try things? Time. Reading motivational articles also requires time. I’ll leave you to do the math on your own. 2. Don’t stress out about moving too slowlyThis is another personal favorite, because I am always not fast enough, not epic enough and not successful enough. Motivational articles, if consumed in the wrong way and in amounts I used to consume them, can do more harm than good in such case. You read how other people become successful, compare their lives to yours, and find out you are doing badly so the vicious cycle continues. In general, try not to do anything that makes you feel a twitch of doubt about yourself. This includes watching your friend’s cool vacation photos, cyber stalking your ex and crying over some girl’s Instagram photo with a thousand-roses bouquet.
3. Explore other things that motivate youNow when I feel down or useless I go to people who love me and ask them to say something nice. I often have a look at my published articles and other things I’m proud of. It can be anything from a bubble bath to talking to your significant other, as long as it gives you a boost in confidence and helps get back on track. Of course, at first it will be difficult and you will crave reading articles, but soon you will find that life has a lot more motivational things to offer you. What do you think of when you hear Beyonce’s name? Is it her beauty, her interesting children’s names, her fortune, her talent, her serious work ethic, her confidence, her husband Jay-Z or Destiny’s Child? I know there are a lot of negative things that newspapers and magazines all over the world write about her and there are even more opinions people have about her and her life, but I always trained myself to see the good in people, so I will stick with it. When I hear Beyonce’s name, I get excited and alert. I start asking myself questions about the work I am doing, the progress I make, how I can create results for myself and more importantly, am I enjoying what I am doing? Beyonce loves her work. She is so passionate about it and if you watched any of her interviews, you will know that this is all she ever wanted to be doing. She wanted to be an artist, to entertain, to make people feel good and to make a change for the better using her talents. Even if for whatever reason you may not like Beyonce, I am sure we can all agree that she is a strong woman who created everything she wanted. She worked tirelessly to build her career in both singing and acting, she married the man she wanted, has children with him, she created financial wealth for herself, she is one of the most famous people on the planet, she gets involved in charitable projects and even performed at the World Humanitarian Day in 2012 – a United Nations event!
I am convinced we all have our own inner Beyonce. That part of us that drives us to achieve our goals, that strives for the best and kicks in when we’ve had enough of not playing full out, of not following our heart and of being fed up with living our lives the way other people would approve of it. What stands between ourselves and our dreams and goals is the belief in ourselves that we can achieve them and the belief that we deserve to achieve them. One of my biggest achievements was to move to London and create my dream life here. I was only 21, but I did everything to make that move happen and with each day I am living more of the life I imagined for myself. There was nothing that could stop me from taking that step, no matter how scary and hard other people tried to convince me it will be. No matter how much my parents worried and no matter how much my friends thought I was giving up a pretty good life in my home country to move somewhere new and start from scratch. I’ll be celebrating my 9th year in London in September. Go figure! This all happened because I believed I deserved more, and I believed I can make it happen no matter what. If I could make this dream come true, so can you! It’s time to take a page out of Beyonce’s book and start working towards your goals and dreams.
Whenever I get asked about the first steps to take when one gets serious about living the life they dream of, I advise people to start asking themselves questions. The first step is to figure out what is important to you, what values do you have that you will do anything to protect, what do you want to do with your time, what do you want to achieve the most, and what example do you want to give to those you interact with? When you get clear and you have your answers, everything will start falling in place. You will feel more connected to your intuition, you will meet people who can help you and you will discover the next steps. All you need to do is take the first one. How are you bringing out your inner Beyonce? College students are put under so much stress that it’s […] The post The Newbie Guide: How to Deal with Stress at College appeared first on MotivationGrid. from https://motivationgrid.com/the-newbie-guide-how-to-deal-with-stress-at-college/ I had a last minute meeting appear in my diary late last Wednesday titled “Team Announcement.” Something told me that in a few hours everything was going to change. I was right. It’s been two years now working in what I would describe as a dream team. We’re all crazy intrapreneurs in my team and we think outside the box. We challenge each other to go even further. We disrupt the traditional business models because that’s all we know how to do. To some we are crazy: to all of us, we want to do something meaningful.
Who is my departing mentor and boss?In one word, “Gandhi.” He’s a Buddhist guy with a Yoda philosophy on life. Each day he says something out there and it takes me days to figure out what he means. There is no straight answer because everything has a meaning when it comes from him. The meaning often takes a while to figure out though. Each day, in our team at work, it’s like preparing for the ancient Japanese Battle of Sekigahara. Every day we have strategy sessions to work out how to take down our enemy. When we get dealt a major blow we know it’s only one of the many battles we face. Overall, we’re optimists led by the chief of the army – my boss and mentor.
His departing gift to meThe challenging thing for my former boss is that he loves to give gifts, yet he knows I don’t like material things. Then, one morning on the train, shortly after the announcement, I get a message on LinkedIn from him. The message read: “…this is my gift to you.”
With those eight lines of wisdom, my life and career were set to change. He was giving me a message. He knew me better than most and he knew how much this was the best gift he could give. I then saw him at work later and he said: “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” He knew deep down that I was upset he was leaving. He knew that I wanted the dream of our team to continue with him at the reigns of the army. What he figured out I needed was the reassurance that the next chapter of my career would soon begin. He wanted me to know that the next great leader would appear when I (the student) was ready. Just as he had come into my life when I was ready, so too would the next boss and mentor. While having a chapter in your life and career come to a close is hard, it’s exciting at the same time. I’ve learned that uncertainty about what’s next is the beginning of the next massive opportunity. Nothing stays the same forever although I sometimes wish secretly that it would. All you can do in these moments of your career is be grateful. The last two years have been the happiest time of my time in any business. Here are the lessons my boss and mentor taught me:
1. Inspired people change the worldMy boss never tried to tell me how to do anything. He always led every conversation with inspiration to do something great. He didn’t want us to be mediocre and be like everyone else. The fact we were a bunch of misfits and didn’t fit in was what he wanted us to embrace. He wanted us to be proud of our unique identity. Inspirational leaders don’t focus on the how; they focus on the why. Because our team knew why we existed and what our mission was, we always found a way. When our critics laughed at us, we chose to push on. In front of our critics, we always showed respect and smiled. That smile came from a sense that the good guys would win. That good would prevail evil. Our team was inspired to change the face of our industry. We went after the big stupid goals that everyone said to run a mile from. We put our careers on the line every day. We took calculated risks that others thought were haphazard.
2. Relationships always trump the price paidMany of the clients we dealt with as a team came about through relationship not price. Each of our clients have become like friends. Doing business with my boss and the team feels like going to a family BBQ. My boss taught us that doing business should be based on trust, your value proposition and the feeling of partnership. Partnerships are based on win-win scenarios. Both sides in every business interaction should feel like they have won. That’s how you know you’re on to something. That’s the way business should be.
3. Solve real problemsMy boss has a fancy job title and with that comes lots of people who want to pitch a product or service. After some meetings, where we saw something cool, my boss would look very pissed off. I’d ask him what was wrong. He says: “Tim, what problem are they solving? If you’re not solving a problem then you shouldn’t be asking us to buy from you!” I thought about that often and realized he was spot on. There’s a lot of clever marketing and companies that have raised money from thin air. These companies only make it when they solve a real problem. Whatever you do in your career, do your best to try and solve a problem. The bigger the problem, the more money you’ll get for solving it.
4. Critical thinking is a rare traitThe one thing that frustrated my boss: lack of critical thinking. Day-to-day in business, we deal with many different characters. Each character forms part of solving a problem (cause that’s what business is after all). The ability to solve problems effectively, my boss believes, is to use critical thinking. This means that you commit to the following: – Thinking clearly before deciding on the appropriate action It’s surprising how rare the superpower is of critical thinking. My boss taught me that it’s something to constantly aim for and to use in business wherever possible.
5. Political capitalThroughout the last two years, it felt like we were facing into a different crisis weekly – such is life. The temptation, my boss taught me, is to try and solve every single one. The challenge with that way of thinking is best summed up through a phrase he drilled into my head like a jackhammer: “Political Capital.” A lot of business encompasses what you would see day-to-day in politics. Each senior leader is a politician, and every politician only has a certain amount of political capital that they can spend on these weekly crises. My boss taught all of us to spend our political capital wisely. This political capital over the last two years has been the currency we have used to buy our way into a vision for the future that some may say looked “laughable.” Massive change and seeing things before they happen often involves a lot of critics. The key I’ve learned is to turn these critics into supporters, rather than enemies. As I said before, business is very much like a strategic battle.
6. Customer focusSo many organizations have this concept of customer centricity at the forefront of what they do. It’s not always a reality though. My boss made sure that I understood the importance of making sure the customer was top of mind with every action I took. I shouldn’t be trying to build anything without having the customer’s input every step of the way. It’s easy to say, but very hard advice to follow. I learned from my boss to do this, or face problems down the road when it’s too late to change.
7. Storytelling futurists matterMany of our competitors over the last few years were able to win in markets where we were unable to. My boss taught me that the reason our competitors could achieve this goal was because they told better stories than us and spoke about the future. These competitors spoke about the future and tried to play a part in it. They released products that were way ahead of their time even if they didn’t get the immediate revenue uplift. Telling stories about the future and releasing products ahead of time gives you a reputation for being a market leader in innovation. All of us are biased to spend our money with companies who appear to be creating the future we have always dreamt of, even if in reality they are not executing the way it’s perceived they are. Steve Jobs saw the future of consumer electronics; all of us have the ability to see the future of our industry and play a part in that story. Stories hold immense power to those who know how to tell them.
8. Your boss can be your best friendThe last two years of my life have been a rollercoaster. Multiple romantic disasters. Huge career wins like going viral all over the Internet. I’ve seen colleagues have major illnesses and even seen crowds of people die right in front of the office I work in. Through each event, my boss has been there. Like Yoda, he’s always had some words of wisdom that don’t give me the answer but help me find it deep within myself. He’s never given up on me. He’s always inspired me. He’s believed in me and the simple idea that I – just like you – can change the world. He’s made me see that this life is so short and so is my career. I don’t know what the next chapter of my career looks like. I don’t know if I’ll ever have a boss, teacher, or friend like this great man ever again. All each of us has is right now. Enjoy it because change is certain. So is the way you think about change and the awesome opportunities that come with it. It’s time for me to take a break and have a holiday. I hope you learned a thing or two about leadership from my boss. I know I certainly did. Comment below!from https://addicted2success.com/quotes/71-albert-einstein-quotes-to-inspire-you-for-life/ If someone offered to give you the drug Bradley Cooper took in “Limitless” would you take it? If you could swallow a pill that was 100% safe and would instantly inspire you – would take it? I know I would. I’m sure most people walking the planet would. A simple shift in mindset is what most of us need – and if a pill could help us feel our full potential and take action on it – it would be incredible. Sadly, it’s unlikely a drug like that exists, and if you’re like me – you’d rather find healthy and safe ways to have success. Instead of seeking the pill, you can cultivate a healthy mind and wire your brain for success in more sustainable ways – ways that guarantee you can have health, wealth, and a long happy life. One of the best paths to creating a powerful mind is to study peak performance states. While many of us have had the experience of being ‘in the zone’ most of us haven’t figured out how to repeat those states consciously. In my case, I know I’ve often wanted those ‘flow states,’ but they came to me by accident…or some would say, “by the grace of God.” Unfortunately, that’s not sufficient. We’re not interested in having the best peak experiences be left to the gods – we deserve to be in control. One of the best resources on how to ‘wire your mind for success’ can be found in Steven Kotler’s work. Until Steven’s work I never really fully understood how to get that state where performance is at peak – instead, it just happened. Most of the time it was just luck, or so I thought. Let me share a few points that you can use instantly to help you create peak states more often:1. Control Your EnvironmentWalk into any Starbucks, McDonald’s, or Barnes & Noble – and you’ll notice they always have similar layouts. The music, the chairs, the smells, the clothes their employees wear. It’s always the same in every store. As billion-dollar empires, these stores are made to help you ‘feel the same every time.’ Every visit trains you to feel a certain way. The more you go into these stores, the more your mind gets wired to believe how the owners of these empires want you to feel. If you want to tap into this same genius, here’s one of your first ‘mind hacks’ to help you wire your mind for success. First, start by performing tasks in the same environment. Find an environment where you feel most able to complete your task at hand. Next, create an awesome playlist that inspires you. Any playlist where the music just sucks you in and will help you get tapped in. To better elucidate this and make this example more concrete – let me give you an example. When I go to the gym, I have a special ‘amp me up’ playlist. It’s got a series of songs which get me jacked up. For years I’ve listened to these songs while at the gym. Anytime I hear them – I feel pumped! If you make yourself a playlist that elicits feelings, it will get into the zone faster. And the more you use this playlist, the more those mental grooves will settle in. When you combine a controlled environment with music – you’re guaranteed to create a mind wired for success. Repeat this over and over and soon enough – you show up and your mind will go right into that peak state. First you have to control where you do your task, do it in the wrong place and you won’t reap the rewards. If you decided to go a vegan conference and all there were only vegan foods – soon enough you’d be eating vegan and talking to vegans. If you went to a meat eating conference, it’s likely you’d soon find yourself eating meat and learning about the powers of consuming beef. Similarly, if you go to the gym to work out you’ll make yourself work out. Your surroundings will shape your habits, your will, and who you become. Use this intelligence to your advantage. Control your environment. Use an environment that compliments your tasks, and you’ll find yourself getting a lot more done.
2. Show UpThere are days I want inspiration to hit me. Thinking this way only delays success. Hoping the gods will look kindly on you and gift you with a muse is not how genius happens. As the great Thomas Edison once put it: The people who get the results are the people who show up. When I read about Michael Jordan, I often read his coaches say: “Jordan was the first to show up and the last to leave.” Sure Michael had natural talent, but his genius was that he showed up. One great example of how genius is born can be found in author, professor and researcher, Malcolm Gladwell’s work. According to Malcolm’s renowned research, a true expert devotes over 10,000 hours of practice to their craft. No way around the time needed to become the best. Time is the friend of excellence. Show up, control the environment, use the playlist, and reap the rewards. This is the magic pill that unlike some Hollywood fantasy has worked for millions of men and women – and it can work for you too – all without any adverse effects.

I went to the doctor and he sent me off for a blood test. The results came back. Apparently, according to my doctor, the results couldn’t have been more perfect. Eight weeks passed and something still felt off. Having had a health scare before where the surgeon found a lump the size of a golf ball in my guts, I don’t take risks when it comes to my health anymore. No more smoking, drinking, or crap food. Life is too important. Back to my story. So at my second doctor’s appointment, I got asked a strange question: “Tim I’m all out of ideas. Do you know what might be causing your low energy?” Jesus now I’m supposed to play the role of the doctor. I couldn’t help but wonder why I was paying for the doctors time although I blocked that out of my head. It will come as no surprise that I also couldn’t figure out the issue either. Then my doctor said to me: “Let’s check your blood pressure again even though I checked it last time.” He checked my blood pressure again and that’s when things got real. Apparently, my blood pressure was much lower than when he checked eight weeks prior. Having no clue why the doc sent me to have a heart scan. The results of the heart scan are still pending. This whole episode got me thinking.

That’s what I learned from my second health scare. We think we are so damn smart and we know we are going to die. The truth is we know we are going to die but subconsciously tell ourselves it’s going to happen sometime in the very distant future. As I saw today, death could be brewing at any moment. The grim reaper could come and take you without notice.
You may not get a second shotThis whole health scare has shown me again that I may not get a second shot. This could be the last blog post I ever write. Tonight could be the last beautiful woman I ever kiss. So given that we don’t know when our time will come, I believe we have to treat every moment like it’s our last shot. I write every blog post as if it’s my last.
Death is why speed mattersThe uncertainty of death is what makes me want to act quickly. I don’t hesitate to do anything. If I feel something, want something, or believe something then I act right now. Not tomorrow, not next year, not when the time is right: right bloody now! That’s what many of you are missing. You think you’ve got all the time in the world but you don’t.
If you hate your job, then quit today.
Mathematical Equation: UNDERSTANDING DEATH x TIME = LegacyThe moment it hit me that death is really going to happen, I changed the way I thought about time. Now all of my time is used to create a legacy. Death is a certainty, so there’s no time like now to create your legacy. Legacy, to me, is the thing that will see me live on after my physical form is gone. This whole self-improvement movement combined with content creation is what I’m using to create my legacy. For you, the process could be different. I suppose what I want you to get from this blog post is that not only are you going to die, but I want you to do something that matters. I want you to come to the same realization I have and create a whopping big legacy. I used to be very naïve and think that I would never have children of my own. I thought to myself “Hey I’m a big shot and I need all the time in the world to go out and be successful!” This whole way of thinking was BS. Creating a legacy is success. Going beyond yourself and having kids or serving others rather than your own selfish desires is success.
The question I asked myself…..To check in and see how I was going on this idea of death, I asked myself a question: “What if I knew I was going to die in the next four weeks? How would I feel? If I had of asked these two question five years ago, I would have said “Freaking horrible!” Now I have a different answer to these two questions. Now I would say that while I would be disappointed that the journey has come to an end, I’m proud of who I’ve become. I’m proud of my legacy. It’s this answer that makes me so proud and has been the best learning experience from this recent health scare. It’s put death in perspective for me and it’s made me figure out the answers to life’s greatest questions. What action could you take to build a legacy?
A new way to feel about deathRather than death being this horrible thing that I never want to experience, it’s now my motivation. It gives me optimism. It tells me if I’m on the right path. It stops me from being the rude, selfish, spoilt brat I used to be who wasn’t grateful for anything that this world had given me including life itself. That’s how many people live. That’s not how you should live. You’re going to die and it may not be that far away. I’d tell you from my experience and health scare to fall in love with that fact. If you want to increase your productivity and learn some more valuable life hacks, then join my private mailing list on timdenning.netfrom https://addicted2success.com/life/today-i-realized-im-going-to-die/ When you were a child, did you ever watch a movie and then reenact your own version of it? Did you ever let your imagination run wild? You were King Kong and you knocked over your little sisters Barbie house? However, then you reached a certain age and it died, didn’t it? The childhood imagination and creativity faded as we learned to be adults. What is fascinating about childhood is our imaginations are so strong that we can step in and out of vastly different worlds in just seconds. We can change worlds, change people, even change universes at a whim. We can create vastly different dimensions and creators to interact with and these creations are almost real. As we become adults, our creativity seems to fade and we live our lives rigidly. We base our realities off of the ‘real world’ and all of it’s consequences. The only way we escape it is through what the media feeds us on TV, alcohol, and drugs. Sometimes we escape through sharing in the drama of those around us to take our mind off our mundane lives. Now don’t stop reading, this may or may not be you, however this is not about living a mundane life and drowning out misery. What if you could bring back the childlike creativity that gave you the ability to fly, become invincible, create alternate realities, and be a completely different person? Our creativity as a child gave us the power to see past our circumstances and build something better. It allowed us to become any one we wanted to be. Think back to when you learned to skateboard to fit in, or you learned to make fun of others to get ahead? Perhaps you learned how to fight back against the bullies. I learned how to manipulate who I was to fit in at an early age, but it wasn’t until I was an adult that I learned just how powerful this skill would be. If you could only apply the creativity to dream up various universes and combine it with the ability to mold who we are to get the desired end result, what would our lives be? What could be accomplished? Our abilities would be endless! You can do that, you just have to bring back your childhood wonder.
As children we were flexible and loving, however as adults we are rigid and cold. As children we were loving and compassionate, however as adults we are careless and bitter. “Life” happened right? Wrong. Just as when you learned to play video games to fit in, you learned how to be an ‘adult’ and you learned how to ‘be’. You can again learn to find the wonder in the world today. Do you think one day Steve Jobs woke up with an entire plan on how to build his company? He started with a dream, an idea to create something totally different, his own device, his own world. Now it took a lot to get his company where it is today but it started out with that very same childhood wonder and ideals. The best part of being a child is you haven’t been told “you cant” by the world yet. You haven’t had any heartbreak, life changing disappointment, or you just don’t understand it yet. The main part of childlike wonder which can be used in business is courage, fearlessness, and the willingness to learn. Think of your business as a totally different world, something that isn’t even real, something that if it didn’t work out it would be ok, now what would you do? What changes would you make? How would your business look today if you ran it knowing 100% for sure everything would work? Take those ideas, write them down, and make them into goals for your business. I am not saying in anyway change your entire business plan and be fearless, assume all the odds are in your favor. When you put yourself in that mindset, you’ll come up with ideas you think are completely impossible, but they aren’t. Make them into goals, break the big seemingly impossible goal into smaller more manageable goals, and follow your childlike dream.
Ok so I know not everyone can completely change their mindset just like that, yet there is no problem in asking for help. Who could possibly help with getting you in a childlike mindset? Maybe talk to some kids, see what they would do, remember what it felt like to be a kid. Maybe take a day and just act like a kid, go to the beach, play on a playground, change your scenery, change your mindset. Now you don’t have to be a child to keep your childlike wonder. In today’s world, it can be hard to see the good and keep a positive mindset. If we could capture just a little of that feeling and put it into our business, how much of your passion for what you do could be restored? And how much could you accomplish if the world never told you, “you can’t.” In life we can’t let doubt and fear get in the way of our dreams, and we must do the same with our business.
